can I turn off my UTHs?

geckogrl6 Nov 06, 2004 10:19 PM

I'd like to cool my collection slightly. Can I turn unplug my under tanks and let them sit @ room temps all the time with just a minor temp drop due to no sun @ night? Is it really required for regulation, or can I keep them @ a constant 70-74 all winter? Will the cage temp drop below my indoor room temp?

Just a question,

Why do you want to cool your leos? You can leave their hot spot at 90 degrees all year long.

and I plan on breeding again this spring. It also gives me some low stress time to do cage improvements.

If I were you, I would leave the heaters on. I leave mine on all year long and my geckos seem to like it. They have better colors and better appetites. If your doing it for breeding reasons, its not really necessary. If you want them to breed, maybe keep your male separate for three months and then introduce the females again. That's what I do and they're breeding right now.

it just seems to be un-necessary to cool them down. Besides don't you want you females to be nice and fat and healthy, full of calcium and ready to lay eggs? Might as well pump them up now and let them have a break inwhich they can be warm, fat and happy

I agree with Matt. It is not needed to cool your geckos. If you keep your males seperate they will usually be ready as soon as they are placed with any females. It is the female that must be ready to accept the males.
