Need help...possible mite/tick?

Aeromeggy Nov 07, 2004 08:28 AM

Hi. 2 days ago I discovered this odd brownish thing on the underbelly of my baby bearded dragon. She didn't have it when I got her in Septmeber, and I take her out every day, so I'm pretty sure I noticed it pretty much right away. I've included a pic. Is it a mite? It os brownish and sticks out a bit from her skin, but isn't moving at all. How do I get rid of it? I rubbed baby oil on it yesterday, but it is still there today.

I suggest if you have the time and money to take her/him to the vet and get it checked by a professional. The pic is good, but (IN MY OPINION) unless you are up close you can hardly tell what that is.

I was figuring it could be like the portion of the egg sack(yolk or whatever they feed off of when they hatch) that didn't completely come off. But if it is fairly new then you are right to be a little concerned.

I think ticks only come off when you smother them.

Does any expert on here know if clear finger nail polish would do the trick? Or if it is even safe for a bearded?

I use clear fingernail polish whenever I get a misquito bite or a chigger bite.

is it me or does it look like the scales above and below form a line/ fold or something like that??

hard to say with that photo. can you get a more in focus pic?

if the scales are formed like it looks then I'd say its not a tick or a mite but rather something of the dragons own body.

get vet or at least a local herper who can look at it to tell more of what that is...

Yes, there is a line. It has always been there, at least since I got him.

When I just went up to feed all the reptiles the tick/mite thing looks to be gone, and now a small hole is left in its place. I cleaned out the entire tank and put Polysporin on the site. When I touch it it doesn't seem to bother the dragon.

i cant tell you what it is but if it is a tick i heard if you smear them with vaseline that it will cut the air supply to it and it will remove itself..good luck i hope everything goes well.

The location of the abcess and the young age of the dragon lead me to think it is left over yolk sac. Or the yolk sac may have droped off before and then something irritated the area like a grain of sand or pretty much anything. It is definitely not a mite(too large) and most likely not a tick(very rare that captive bred caged animals get ticks unless they are playing outside). You did the right thing by putting some broad spectrum antibiotics on it. Just my take Good Luck

I agree. i think it's the left overs of the yolk sac chord..... I had a few babies that had the same thing. It goes away by itself but antibiotic ointments deffinately wouldn't hurt anything.
