subrate up the nose?

claymore Nov 07, 2004 12:04 PM

I was wondering if Uro's have a habit of getting things caught up in there nose while digging arround? I've seen Milo digging & start to worry that he will end up with a nose full of sand if he"s not carefull. He hasn't so far but though. Have any of you heard of such a thing happening?

I know that uros discharge excess salt through their nose, and probably some larger particles of sustrate also that may get in there. However if the substrate you are using is very dusty - containing particulates, this can/will cause respiratory problems. Sometimes severe.

My Uro did have a habit of getting the crushed walnut substrate up his nose (disclaimer: crushed walnut substrate should NEVER NEVER NEVER be used, chalk this instance up to poor information and an inexperienced Uro keeper. This occurred 5 years ago). Since he has been on sand he has not seemed to have had a problem with it. Like you though, I always wonder how he doesn't end up with a nose full!
