Hi there:

I keep my corn snake in a 20-gallon woodland setup with an undertank heater to keep him warm. I used to use a heat lamp, but every time I turned it on, he would burrow into the substrate or wedge himself in between some slabs of cork bark. I noticed that the only time he would come out to patrol the cage was at night. I removed the lamp. Even now, he hides way back in the dark area during the daytime, and only comes out at night. Should I still use a lamp?

If you have a diplay type tank then just use a normal light bulb
Maybe a 40 watt or 60 watt. This will allow you to see the tank witout raising the temps too much.
Otherwise you need to remember that corns are basically nocturnal. They are more active at night moving to the shodows during light.
(most of the time)
some are more active during the day then others but generaly nocturnal
