will corns take to rats?

janome Nov 07, 2004 01:45 PM

my ghost is about to shed and has gotten quite large. an adult mouse doesn't show a bulge in him anymore and he won't eat 2 or 3 so was wondering if they take to small rats easily? i have a jungle carpet python that took to rats pretty easily (I was lucky with her, some carpets won't eat rats at all).
i looked on line about buying 'jumbo' mice but by the time you pay for shipping its just as much as if you buy locally. i am going to call to see if i can get jumbos locally but was wondering if they will small rats.

They sure will. I feed mine rats. I have a 02 male amel and he eats a f/t rat pup every 7 days. Recently I started my two 03 females on f/t rat pinkies. I find having the frozen prey here at home much better than having to go to the pet shop every time my snakes need to feed. Even with shipping costs i think its cheaper. But wouldn't matter even if it cost the same, the convenience having them here at home is worth it.

I feed f/t also to all my snakes. I usually buy them at Petco but they only have pinkies, fuzzies, and adult mice. Or small, med, large rats. I am going to call couple of other places. Thanks for reply.

i have a 03 snow that has been on rats since she was big enough to get a day old pinkie down...once she got on rats she grew lots faster than on mice.....she eats weekly on fuzzy rats and is growing like crazy

thats because of the nutrients on a baby mammal versus an adult mammal.....(mothers milk is better for snakes than seed or dog food)

the bigger the babies the better the nutrients

They definitely had a lessened feeeding response to rats. I had them on rats for about 2-3 months but they never seemed to like them. A lot of sniffing and avoiding the rats before finally eating them. When I ran out of frozen rats I switched back to mice and my corns fed much more aggressively. I just feed 2 adult mice instead of one small rat.
