Why aren't my Cresteds breeding?

martinsonly Nov 07, 2004 03:06 PM

I have two very nicely colored Cresteds, a very obvious male/female pair. They are mature and very vocal with each other at night. The female is a little larger than the male and tolerates everything about him (he even seems to preen her on occasion). Are they just going to stay "friends"?

Help; I want some babies!!!

Thanks.

Hmm...Do Cresteds have varied attraction levels with other Geckos?

So if the male Crested is not attracted "sexually" to the female then he will choose not to mate with her?

I have not been around Geckos to have an opinion, nor have I read anything suggesting otherwise.

I had the exact same problem. My solution was - a nice 80 degree basking spot.

I had my geckos at room temp - fine for all around living - but in Minnesota, for some reason - the lower 70's weren't conducive to breeding. I have a hot spot of 80 on the top of a branch, and my main temp is in 75-78 (although I have spots on the bottom which are lower).

As soon as I raised the temps (this summer, in fact) - I started getting egg production. Interesting, huh?

I can't promise that this is your solution - but it was to me. Just make sure it doesn't get too high - too much heat is not good for them either.

Hope this helps or gives you some ideas.

I have a night blue spot that gets their upper branches, the rest of the room is always in the upper 70's and higher in the summer months (I'm in So Cal). I wonder if an 80 spot all day (though they sleep away from it) might help? I'll post again if I catch 'em at it or she lays.

Thanks.

mine seem to become lethargic if left anywhere above 80. they also become a ghosty color like they're going to shed. i have had 5 breeding sized crested geckos for 6 months and just now started getting eggs from them. i keep all five in the same cage and at times it gets quite interesting in there. this way i assure there is some competition and the males make sure they get what they want.
after i KNOW the female is gravid or after they have been in the same cage for a few days i separate them and wait for the eggs. seems to be working quite well for me. soon i will know the sex of 3 other little guys so my breeding plans will change quite a bit. i've noticed the females tend to stay near the males that i have witnessed them breeding with.

I have the same problem with two of my cresteds. They have both been of breeding size for some time, and have lived together since about 04/04. I have seen no eggs but the two of them are inseperatable. they sleep together, hunt together, but no nookie. At a reptile show on 10/24 i picked up another female crested, and the next night the new female was mating with the male. I dont know if it has to do with attraction, but it seems that might be the case. The female that hasnt produced any eggs will be getting a new male in about 3-4 weeks so ill see how it goes. maybe shes a lesbian?
