Question about ghosts...

RyanT Nov 07, 2004 03:30 PM

I was wondering what the difference is between all the ghost varieties? Orange, yellow, butterscotch, green, grey - are they all the same genetic trait with color variations or what? By the way is butterscotch just another name for oranges or yellows? Can one type be bred to another (like butterscotch x yellow = misc. ghosts) or are they all specific (can only breed one type to the same type)? They're one of the morphs that really interest me. Just wwanna know what the options are with them. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks alot. Ryan.

...the answers are not known. The different varieties of ghosts may involve the same gene or may not, similar to the situation with mojaves/lessor platy's/butters.

Some believe oranges and butterscotches may be the same, with visual differences the result of outbreeding.

Some breeders have shown compatibility between some of the different ghosts and visa versa.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Scott. Any info helps. I'm just getting back into balls after like 15 years of not keeping them (and there were no morphs then). Their genetics are like this endless puzzle from what I'm seeing. Really interesting. And confusing sometimes too. Like how does someone differentiate between orange and butterscotch if they look the same? Anyway, I asked because I'm gonna pick up a het for butterscotch male. Now I know to make sure to stick with a "butterscotch" female. Thanks alot.

buterrscoth and orange have been crossed and yellow and green I think.......but.....there are more wild oranges ,butterscotch, green, etc coming in every year....

as Scott says......not all known for fact yet...

oersonally I think MOST will cross........and still throw ghosts....

I see orange butterscotches...and butterscotch oranges....yellow both and green......well......all over......

I will be mixing het greens and butterscotches......

my butterscotches look like alot of oranges.....

RMJ has orange that screeeeeeeams orange...as does some of nerds'...........could be what they outcrossed to......could be actually another gene along with the orange ghost....?..........

they are all cool........

IF you are goona dump some money...GET THE GIRL FIRST.......hets are cheap...........
