RES - basking

royc Nov 07, 2004 05:44 PM

My RES seems to be basking way too much. As soon as I come downstairs in the morning, hes already on top of the Turtledock just sitting there. around noon i turn on the basking lamp and at 6 pm i go to turn it off. i check again right before i go back upstairs at night around 10 pm and he's still sitting on it. His eyes are closed and everything. I tap on the glass and he doesn't budge. i have to pick him up and put him in the water or he'll just fall asleep there. He's been doing this for a long time now. Is this normal? He used to be pretty active in the water but he still basked alot. Now he's never in the water.

From all of the posts I have read it sounds like maybe a upper respitory infection. Lethargic behavior, swollen eyes, increased basking, and weezing are some signs. Hopefully one of the more experienced people here could give you a more definate answer. Good luck.

his eyes aren't swollen and doesn't open his mouth to breath. all he does is bask.

if your water temperature is too cold, it may cause the turtle to want to bask all the time. your water temp should be in the mid 70's and the basking temperature should be around 85 degrees. hope this helps...
