Pacific Tree Frogs

kungfu2811 Nov 07, 2004 05:50 PM

Around this time of the year, the rain fills up 2 small ponds in a field near my house. Nobody knows about the ponds exept me and my next door neighbor, and thats because the grass from the field covers up the view of the pond from a distance. The pacific tree frogs(I think thats the species) all come to these two ponds to breed, and during a heavy rain when you walk outside, you hear so many frogs croaking its insane. Last year I captured about 6 of them and put them together in a breeding tank, with lots of water for them to spawn in. They called a lot at night, but no eggs ever appeared. I decided to let them go at the pond. This year im going to try it again. I found a female(i think its a female) at one of the ponds and have set her up in a tank. I plan on catching a few more to make sure I get males and females. Does anyone have any tips for getting this species to breed?
Also, I think that some of them may have bred with another species of frog, because the results from last year(i caught some tads and raised 'em up to froglets) were amazing. Not only in number, but mainly color. The froglets were all multi-colored. Some were pink, gold, green, and silver, some just gold, some even orange. The froglets I was finding near the pond were also like this. Is this just normal coloring for this species? Here is a pic of the female I found. The green on her is a lot more intense in person.
Also, is there any sure way to sex this species?

Thanks,
Andrew

Yeah, these guys are awesome. I catch 'em here in the spring, and i too swear that they breed with other species. The colors you say are normal for the babies, they seem to dull out as they age. Every once in a while, (spadefoots breed in the same pond) i swear i see a tadpole that is both like a spadefoot and like a treefrog. i catch the tadpole, put it in my pond, and i have never seen one live to adulthood. it's really interesting.all the other tadpoles i catch at the pond that i collect live to adulthood and croak in my yard. Have you considered keeping a few? i have 3, after checking with the fish and game and getting everything i need ot collect them. they are fascinating. as for sexing them, when they are adult or near adult, the males will have a dark brown or gray throat pouch, from being stretched out during croaking. Sorry for the endless babble, hope it helps though!
