tegu question

nogard Nov 07, 2004 07:19 PM

My tegu has been hibernating for about two weeks, it has been pretty cold here in AZ recently, but last night it stayed at about 80 degrees and he was up and moving and basking a little, he still hasnt taken any crickets, or superworms, but he has taken a few pinkies, about twelve in the last two weeks, and then he basks for a few hours and goes to sleep for about three days, I just wanted to know if this is a normal thing in tegu hibernation, I keep him watered and offer grapes every day but he doesnt come out at all. his temps are all good, and his humidity is good as well

thanks

Sounds pretty normal to me. Just make sure the temps stay up as long as he's eating at all. You don't want to reduce any temps as long as there may be food in his stomach.

Yeah, sounds normal. More like a brumation. Mine did that in July, he was real lazy, wouldn't eat each day, sleeping days at a time... I think he realized it wasn't going to get cold and food would always be there, so why hibernate? I want a year round tegu, so I guess I got lucky. Yes, as long as he is eating keep the temps up full blast (sounds like you are already doing that though). Good luck.
