Tips on taming Trans Pecos yearling?

BILLY Nov 07, 2004 07:22 PM

Hello!

I was fortunate enough to find my yearling female Trans Pecos ratsnake at this past Daytona. She is from Peace River Herps stock, and is most likely the most gorgeous normal colored specimen I have ever seen, hence the fact I purchased her. I am totally into pits, so this snake is a nice change of pace and I have always wanted an exceptional Trans Pecos in my collection.

She is a yearling and from what I can tell, may not have been handled much in her first year of life or treated like a pet per se. She is very tense, and has bitten me a number of times. I am used to all my snakes being dog tame, so this is different for me as well. In the past, I have had very mean tempered snakes and of course, was bitten.

To me...after studying her behavior, it seems like she is reacting out of being frightened rather than being mean spirited. If I am holding her, she is of course checking out her surroundings, and then when she faces me, will flatten her head and either will strike or gets ready to. She does look so cute though with her huge eyes! LOL!

Has anyone here had experience with snappy Trans Pecos rats? I have always heard that they were calm. She will remaind calm if I do not move when I hold her. Perhaps that since her eyes are larger than other species of snakes, she is able to see more and be more aware of her surroundings. Does that make sense?

I have thought that a steady schedule of short handlings would do the trick, but do wish to hear other's experiences as well. I would love to take a pic of her to show her off, but didn't want to get her stressed any more than she already is.

She has a cage with a great hiding spot that she uses 50% of the time and then she hides under the paper towels. I keep her at about 78 as well with my other snakes, mostly pits.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or experiences to be shared would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Billy! Nice to see you got a Trans Pecos, I love them. Sorry to say I dont keep them yet, so I cant offer you advice on yours specifically. Its kept dry right? I think they are a desert dweller, so low humidity may be important.

Well best of luck with your Pecos, beautiful snakes!

They seem to be one of those species that are usually tame but every now and then a perticular spcimen is an exception to the rule.
The first one I ever owned was just the way you described yours.I would be holding her and she was o.k.,then if one of the kids or the wife walked by she would strike out at them. One odd thing I found with that snake was that I could reach into her totally dark cage at night and pick her up with no problems.Daytime was a different story!
Both that I have right now are really good snakes with great temperments.
A buddy of mine had like 3.7 of them and two of them had the temperment of a racer.
