help please...feeding problem

maestrOwen Nov 07, 2004 08:06 PM

I got two baby Borneos last Saturday and the guy who sold them to me said they had been feeding on fuzzy mice.

I couldn't get fuzzies so I got hoppers (I know the snakes are big enough for hoppers) and tried to feed my snakes this weekend and it didn't work out so well...

I tried what worked a year ago when I got Daphne:
I put the snakes into a separate container with some crumpled brown paper and put the mouse in...
The male got really huffy and struck at the mouse several times, but more like a defensive strike.
The female didn't really seem to care...she just kind of hid under the crumpled paper.
Then I tried both of them with a two-week-old rat and neither of them cared.

Any suggestions/help would be very much appreciated...

thanks a lot

First off, in general, how are your BSTP's set up? Sometimes little short-tails may be overwhelmed in big enclosures or by "excessively" warm temperatures (what's normal for bigger bloods may be too hot for babies on occasion).

Try feeding them in their own enclosures. Your baby short-tails may be too shy for feeding in a separate container - it's like "Bam! Out of the enclosure I'm used to, now in unfamiliar surroundings, uhhh....maybe I just want to hide!" Try feeding your snakes half an hour or so after the light in your snake room goes out for the evening. If you're feeding hopper mice, give them a couple of hours & then check in...if you have to leave the mice in overnight (which I'm not a fan of at all - too many horror stories) then ensure the mouse has access to food & water other than your snake. If you use fuzzy rats, they're safe to leave in overnight, and also tend to jerk around & make a lot of movements that can get a hungry little python's attention.

Good luck!

Just because I have a short attention span doesn't mean

A while ago I bought a pair of red bloods. They were babies, and one of them also had that problem; so here is what I did to get it to eat:

1. Since I feed my animals frozen/thawed, I run the food item under hot water and put it and the snake in a small container that is not see through and leave it alone.

2. I get the food and put its nose inbetween the front of the snakes lips, press it against them and I get a feeding response. This might take a few tries, but it usually worked for me, and my snake usually keep eating once it bit it like that.

Hope this helps!
