Leopard Geckos for Dummies...

FroggyToads Nov 07, 2004 08:18 PM

As you can probabally tell from my name here I am not exactly what you would call a Gecko guy or even a Lizard guy. That being said I have gotten bitten by the Leopard Gecko bug. I want one and I have been doing quite a bit of reading on the subject. I still have a few questions which hopeful;ly someone can clear up for me.

The potting soil that I must put in their "caves" is regular potting soil good?

Paper towling is good to use as substrate? Nothing better I could use?

I know two males cannot co-exist, is it healthy to have two females together? Or is it better to have them alone?

A food dish should be used for placing crickets and other food items? Is this the best way?

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

Regards,

The potting soil that I must put in their "caves" is regular potting soil good?
--By caves do you mean Humid hides? Very few people use potting soil for any cage furnishings. I suggest a container or commercial bought hide lined with paper towel misted daily

Paper towling is good to use as substrate? Nothing better I could use?
--do a search on this forum regarding tile using tile as a substrate.

I know two males cannot co-exist, is it healthy to have two females together? Or is it better to have them alone?
--You can have females however they do not get lonely and are actually solitary animals. If you do plan on putting 2 together i suggest having a spare cage/rubbermaid container incase problems - bully - occur.

A food dish should be used for placing crickets and other food items? Is this the best way?
--Food dishes are just a way for us to feed the geckos easier, many will associate the dish with food and with regular feeding times, leos will wait by their food dishes. Food dishes IMO are a must for those using loose substrates, otherwise it doesnt matter

good luck

1) You dont have to put potting soil in their cages, you can have vermaculite in their "humidity hide" you can make one by using a glad ware container by flipping it upside down and cutting a hole on the side of it so it can get into it, and put the lid on it and put paper towels on the lid so that you can get your humidity, that is the easiest way for beginniners.

2) you can use paper towels, tile, roughed up linolium for a substrate but i dont recommend sand due to impactions.

3) yes your right two males cant be in the same cage but 2 females can unless one of them is bullying the other one. But if you get them from 2 different places you have to quarantine them for 3 months (keep them in seperate containers)

4) You can use a food dish to put mealworms, super worms, occasionally wax worms, or crickets in. If you are going to use crickets then i either suggest pinching off their legs so they cant get out, or let them walk around and get eaten but take them out after a half an hour because they will eat your gecko.

I dont think that is true, They may bite him/her but i think it (if anything) would be EXTREEMLY rare for the leo to actually get eaten, If your leo gets bit it will move, Unless it is sick.

im sorry i saw the ------------ so i though that was the end of your post, and yes they will eat your gecko. Your taking it literally they wont eat your gecko until it dies. They will bite and eat parks of it, thats how a lot of geckos lose toes.
