Ontogenetic Color Change in BRBs

Jeff Clark Nov 07, 2004 10:08 PM

....Most of my BRBs are born with very pretty colors and they turn brownish over the first six months and stay that way until they are about 15 months old. After that most of them just get better and better each time they shed. This one is 16 months old and was real brown recently. Today I noticed that it has improved in color quite a bit recently. I am going to take PICs of this one and another one that is the same age over the next few months to see just how much they do change. All PICs will be taken in my snakeroom with my Kodak DC3400. No special lighting and no computer enhancements. This PIC of a male was taken this evening.

Howard,
...Those two and most of my babies are descended from 15 imported BRBs I got in the early 90s and a few other BRBs from other breeders. I probably do have a couple with National Zoo stock in somewhere back among their pregenitors.

Keep us posted on those photos! I like to see them change. I wanted to sell a pair I bought in Dec. of last year as neonates and you said basically to wait a while longer. I'm glad I have waited because the male is definately changing. I don't know what they'll end up looking like, but I am glad to see at least one lightening from that too dark brown color. I kinda like the color he's becoming....maybe the female will follow. I really like the brightly contrasting crescents of these you posted pics of. Actually, when you say you breed for crescents, you're not joking. All of yours hold true to your desire.

P.S. The ones I got from you are both doing very well..........and still neither has offered to bite. I know now why the male cost more. He is definately colored more vividly. Very different from the others I have. I hope he continues on this path. You are a good judge of those babies color. I only hope someday I will be able to do the same.
