First you need to get exact weights (in grams/kilograms) on each snake because dosage will be determined by the snake's weight. The normal dosage is 5 to 8 mg/kg. The normal strength of Baytril injectible is 56.8 mg/ml. So for a snake that weighs 1 kg., dosage will be from .09 to about .16 cc, a range of .10 to .14 being a safe midpoint range. You will need to use a .5cc or 1cc syringe to get an accurate dose.

How to actually administer the intramuscular injection:

You will need either restraining tubes or two people for this.

1. use the syringe to draw the appropriate dose of medication from the vial, then pointing the needle upward, tap the side of the syringe so all the little air bubbles form one bubble at the base of the needle, then slowly push the plunger in until the air is forced out of the needle.

2. either place the snake in a restraining tube with an injection slot in the side or have someone else control the snake while you give the injection.

3. Locate the muscle in between the spine and the ribs in the first 1/3 of the snake's body. This will be the injection site.

4. angle the needle toward the snake's head at such an angle as to be able to stay in the muscle with the needle and not punch through the abdominal wall. Keep your fingers off the plunger until you are ready to actually inject the medicine.

5. quickly and firmly insert the needle into the muscle, then pull back slightly on the plunger. If blood flows into the syringe, pull the needle back out, move the injection site just a little and push the needle back in. When no blood flows into the syringe if you pull back on the plunger, then go ahead and push the plunger to inject the medicine.

6. That's it...go ahead and pull the needle out and discard it in an appropriate fashion.

The dosing I gave you above is INCORRECT!! I gave you dosing/preparation strength for Droncit. I was on the phone with another person talking about Droncit when I was typing my message to you. My apologies...DO NOT follow the dosing in the message above. The below is correct for Baytril:

Preparation strength is 22.7 mg/ml.

Normal dose is 5 mg/kg every 48 hours for 2 or three treatments.

By the way, Baytril injectible can also be given orally.

Also, one other thing I forgot to mention is make sure to give the injection in the skin between the scales.

All other text regarding the actual administration of the injection is correct.

Sorry for the confusion.

I already injected them.

It seems quite painful!!

Is it normal that after I give the inj a small bump remains at the site?
Or that means I didn't gave it in the muscle but under skin?

Thanks for your helph!!

Nope, that's normal. It will absorb. I just injected 2 Drymarchon with Droncit (for tapeworms), and it always leaves a nasty looking whelp, but it's usually gone by morning. Even if you get it under the skin (S/C) intead if in the muscle (I/M) it will still absorb, just more slowly. Baytril has been known to leave small ulcers at the injection site, but that's really kind of unusual in my experience.
