Woke up to a clutch of eggs!!! Help!

oLOVEo Nov 08, 2004 11:29 AM

I wasnt expecting my two beardies to end up having eggs.. My female is about 9 years old and I was informed that she shouldnt have any more clutches.. Well, this morning I woke up to a huge pile of sand in an area of my tank and I can see three eggs through the glass so now I have no idea what to do! I seen her digging a bit and was going to pick up some nesting material and a small tank to put inside the one that they are in, just incase she was trying to lay eggs, well now its too late! So my question is, do I leave them there and spray the sand down? If so, then how often? I don't have access to an incubator until this weekend and by then, I think it's to late, also, Im not able to move the eggs now am I?

I'd still put her in a lay box just in case she has any left. Other than that, no the eggs won't survive until you can get an incubator this weekend (at least it would be highly unlikely). Accidents happen, freeze the eggs and throw them away. I'd keep a close eye on her in a couple weeks, she could lay again in about a month and if you notice things like sudden weight gain, lumps in her belly, etc. get a incubator in asap and be ready for it next time.

that I could just leave the eggs where they are and have them hatch?... Also, My female is looking really tired this morning, as she should! She worked hard!... Is there certain things I should be giving her? Calcium is one thing that I know she should be getting a lot of right now, correct? anything else?... I thought she was looking fat, I was looking for lumps in her belly and didnt see any..

I've never heard of anyone having success with just leaving them in the tank. If you really want to give it a shot look up "fish tank incubator", there are plenty of sites that give detailed instructions. They're not as good as a hovabator, but they'll work in a pinch. Yes, definitely up her calcium intake. Other than that, a nice long bath and a normal healthy diet just more of it. I like to give my girls a treat afterwards also, like a few supers or waxies. You can't always see the eggs but if you feel for them while she's in the bath you can usually feel them. Other signs are digging, restlessness, not eating, sudden weight gain, etc.
