Veiled breeding size

Hacker Jun 30, 2003 10:59 AM

I was wondering if veileds that are bred at a smaller size 5" svl if they will not obtain their max size? I keep my females in a large open enclosure and one of the vines fell, so they could escape. I found one of the females on top of the male enclosure with the male very fired up. I have not tried to breed these 2 chams before. The female is about 5" svl and the male looks to be the same if not smaller. I was just going to put the female back in her enclosure but I was a little curious so I put her in with the male. He went to town immediately. I am just wondering since she is being bred at a smaller size does that mean that she will not get as big as she would have if she was not bred? Thanks for your time.

What you have to worry about when breeding small females is them becoming egg bound. It has happened to me twice, before I knew the cause. When bred young, their reproductive system is not fully developed sometimes, and the result will be a partial egg laying. The intestines can entangle the oviduct, causing a few eggs to be laid, but then the rest will be stuck, and without surgery, the female and the eggs will die. It probably will not happen, but the chances are much greater if she's less than 9 months old, and on the small size.

No this will not stunt the growth however you will want to provide well dusted crickets i reccomend sticky tounge vitamens and she will also need lots of food and water after birth.
