Affixing heat panels too...screen tops......

lilroach56 Nov 08, 2004 01:52 PM

IS there any way you can affix a Radiant heat panel to the screen top of an aquarium?

Yes, but I don't know what's recommended/discouraged by the various companies.

The easiest way is to have strips of wood, aluminum or other metal running across the screen top. These strips would be ON TOP of the lid. They should probably be riveted onto the rim of the screen lid.

Then the mounting screws for the RHP can go through the screen and strips of wood/metal. The screen would essentially be sandwiched between the RHP and the strips.

I've never mounted a RHP this way but have done so with a food hopper for rodents.

All i would need to do is mount wood on the top and then just screw the heat panel into the wood?

phew...a LOT easier than i thought.

It is pretty easy. Basically you are creating something to secure the panel to. Boaphile also makes a heat panel made specially for aqauriums. It comes with a vented hole already molded into it.

Yes, it really is that easy. In fact my way is probably more complex than in needs to be. A scrap piece of plywood slightly bigger than the RHP is all you need. Then the mounting screws of the RHP will probably be sufficient to hold everything in place.

But if you want it to be a bit more secure you can find some small flat heat sheet metal screws to go from the underside of the screen lid, through the screen, and into the wood. You'll want to find a screw that won't make contact with the plastic rim of the aquarium.

There are several ways to make this work. Just make sure the outside rim of the screen lid is supporting the weight. Don't have the screen supporting the weight.

Our Pro Heat radiant panels can be attached to a screen top by simply using 1/8" fender washers on top of the screen.

That's exactly what I was thinking...simple fenderwashers...and use locknuts with a nylon insert...one last suggestion.
Use stainless steel hardware for doing the attaching.
It will come off when you want it to...it wont rust, and by not rusting wont stain or do any damage to the RHP frame, or screen.
You can scuff up the stainless a bit, and even paint it black.
