Check your state regulations to see if there are any laws restricting native animals. I know it is just a Black Rat & that they are overly abundant throught the US but gov. agencies monitor these forums regularly & might track you down. Laugh now but they are serious....

Yeah I have to have a permit if I have more than 5 of the same native species.

I never really thought of it before, but I guess the feds do spend time on these forums seeing who has what. Now here's my question, how do I get that job!?!?!?!? lol

I live in Kentucky. As far as the feds I know some game wardens here they said they don't ever watch the kentucky reptile expo forum but they have showed up once at the expo.

My understabding is,we in Va are not allowed to have more than 5 of a native species....Permit or no.

With the exception of Corn,Eastern King and Mole King IF we have a "propagate and sell" permit, which I found to be tooe xpensive to be worth it if you are just a "hobby" breeder

"It is lawful to collect and possess live for private use** only, and not for sale, no more than 5 individuals of any non-listed species of amphibian and reptile"

I hear you! Went back and read the site again. I used to keep primarily local snakes, then when I became interested in breeding them, I realized I needed to expand my collection to snakes native to outside the state. Pretty much one clutch hatches and you're over the limit. So now I keep Asian rat snakes mainly (and a few boids).
It's kind of a shame, VA Black snakes around here are really nice and dark and I enjoyed keeping the one local one I had. I do recall someone on another forum looking into getting a permit to propagate and sell, but I don't remember how much she said they told her it would be.
