new kingsnake (open for suggestions)

cesktw0 Nov 08, 2004 06:57 PM

just purchased a beautiful California kingsnake. Its actually a mix between eastern and western. Shes around 2 months old and is about 12.5 inches. Havent really had much experience with snakes. Did alot of researching though. As far as my set up i have her in a 10 gallon right now. Substrate is cypress mulch, have a couple logs and things for hidding spots and cool off zones. Big enough water dish for her to fully submerge in. Lighting using a basking light (50watt) during day. Infared light at night,(40watt). Feeding her pinkies. twice a week. (seems to be a good ready eater.) Good temperment other than a little jumpy. Other than that never tried to strike at me. Honestly Im open for any suggestions on alterations or advice on caging and handling or anything. I would really like to learn as much as i can it would be greatly appricated. sorry it was a long post. thank you!

Have you checked your temps. 50 watt sounds way to high of wattage for a 10 gal. tank, 15 watt should be about right. You need to spot check different areas in the tank, and try to maintain one side of the tank about 80 degrees and the other about 72 degrees. 15 or 20 gal tank with under the tank heater on one side would be easier to establish your heats. If you don't have a book on care and maintenance of king snakes, it would be a good idea to get one.

Good Luck!
