cable2001 Nov 08, 2004 07:17 PM

Ok, I got my new background installed and renovated my collared tank. What do you guys think?

NICE JOB, they should be quite happy in there. I was almost waiting to see them with a little CACTUS COOLER drink in their hands, hehehhee, A collared Vacation Home.

I really like the back, what was it made with? Neat texture.

Nice pics !

Hmmmmmm.....

You know.... I was thinking of building a greenhouse and putting together a tropical setup... but how cool would it be to make a desert???

The base of the background is styrofoam. The texture was rough hewn with spray foam from a can. It was then coated with resin tinted with granite texture tint, carved and sculpted, then painted and sealed.

The pictures are great, but it is indescribably beautiful in person. Amon and Amaunette absolutely love it. They climb the back wall all the time, and seem to enjoy diving off of it! The little daredevils...

It's also funny when the crickets think they've gotten away and try to climb the wall. That's a death sentence.

I love that, I am sure the lizards do too. I want to make one because just the other day I covered three sides of the tank with typing paper because Ezra was going mad trying to jump onto the windowsill at our new house. Annabella is always trying to climb the walls to go out through the top. Thanks for showing us!

One more thing...what is rough hewn???

cable2001 Nov 09, 2004 12:51 PM

I commisioned an artist friend of mine to make it for me. I don't know what kind of paint seal he used. I'll ask next time I talk to him.

"Rough hewn" just means that he sprayed the foam about where he wanted ledges and texture, then sculpted them later. It really looked like crap when I saw that stage, but as you can see, it turned out great.

I really enjoy seeing creations such as that. I really like artificial rock work.

Thanks again for sharing it with us.

That came out very nice!!! You had to do all this work inside the tank, or was this done, then inserted??? Please fill us in on all the details...the work is fantastic, and your rock face very realistic.

Thanks for sharing,

I don't know. As I said elsewhere in this thread, I had a friend make it for me who is much more artistically inclined than I am. He created it in his shop, and I inserted it afterwards.

All I know is that all of the materials I bought (styrofoam, resin, tint) came from my local Pat Catans. The rest (spray foam, paint, seal) could have come from anywhere. But, he shops at Pat Catans a lot, so it all could have come from there.

what a fantastic background! I have messed around with stryo and modeling paste or tile grout (it even comes in cool desert colors). I would seal it though. thanks for sharing your info. It is truly a masterpiece, congrats!

First off,let me say, what a tank!!!! That is by far,the best tank I have ever layed my eyes on!!
I have a question,Are the plants in the tank real? I love the look those plants gave your tank. I have cactus plants my self, and after seeing your tank,I thought about adding a couple to mine, but i wanted to see if yours were real or not first.
Have you asked the guy that made yours,if he would be interested in makeing some $$ and making something like that for someone else?
Ok enough with the questions, just wanted to tell ya what a great setup you have given your lizards!!
