Breeders

I have had my hands in herpetoculture since about age 8. That now puts me 3 decades deep. Been away from time to time - but I'm very interested in getting back up to speed. My post was motivated by cleaning up our basement and coming across all of my old "Vivarium" magazines. In particular, an issue from 1994 that dealt with breeding varanids in captivity. It also covered the captive breeding of V.Komodensis at the National Zoo. Just under a decade ago, breeding monitors seemed to be more happenstance than planned.

In trying to update my knowledge base, it certainly appears that things have changed - some.
Looks like the Ridge Tails are bred almost commonly - and have found some articles and posts pertaining to V.flavirufus and V.Gouldii.

Mark Bayless was kind enough to address my query on another forum, but thought I would offer it up here as well.

Is anyone working with, or had success with the smaller tree monitors? (V.beccari, prasinus) In my internet wanderings I have seen pics of what appear to be both yellow, and blue tree monitors - and able to find very little information about them.

For clarities sake, I don't currently have any varanids. They are restricted in MA, requiring a permit. I did have a permit, many years ago, and primarily handled rescues and adoptions. If I can convince the Commonwealth of Mass, and my wife that I should be allowed to keep monitor lizards again, who knows.

The Komodo, the ackie, the flavi/gouldi, or the tree monitors?

Hey Gene,

Second post was for humor/sarcasm based upon my observation that most of the threads that generate a number of responses are beginner questions and appear to be highly flammable.

I was looking to get an idea of what is new with regard to captive varanids, husbandry, breeding, and nobody bit. My particular interest was, and is, V.prasinus.

I did take a look at your gallery by the way. Fine looking animals you have.

Thanks.

I thought that sounded a little hoakey but around here who knows?

You might check out "Mike's Monitors" he has or had a beautiful green tree monitor by the name of "G Monkey". He has a link on the top of the page here.

He also bred the black & the green together and produced a hatchling. Sadly it didn't live very long.

Thanks for the link Gene. Looks like Mike has a good deal of information pertaining to tree monitors.

For a monitor? No. I started my Sav in a 20 and he grew about 6 inches in the first 11 months I had him. Now that is quite a small amount for a monitor to grow (I know, it was b/c I didnt feed him every day and I fed him only crickets, thats gonna change) but i just moved him into a 40 gallon breeder. If i were you, if you can afford it, go for a 55 gallon or maybe even 75. That'll last u a while. The 20 im sure he'll grow out of in no time, at least start w/ a 40 gallon breeder. Cheers.
