The snake is definitely a Plainbelly Watersnake (Nerodia erythrogaster) of which the Redbelly (N.e.erythrogaster) and Yellowbelly (N.e.flavigaster are subspecies. The two forms intergrade extensively in Alabama so you can't really assign them to a subspecies. The juvenile you have there could grow up to look like a Yellowbelly, Redbelly, or intermediate between the two.
