Fruit fly culture parasite?

TheFrogGuy Nov 08, 2004 08:28 PM

Hello, I noticed something in my newly set up ff cultures the other day. They have little worm looking things in there. They are much smaller than the maggots. But they swim in a snake-lake or eel-like fashion.

I have never payed too much attention to the life cycle of my fruit flies, so I am wondering... are they a parasite, or just very tiny fruit fly larva? If they are some kind of parasite, are they something I should really worry about, or not too much?

Thanks!
~Aaron

I'd bet they are just tiny fruit fly larvae. Those guys are really small when they hatch out.

I agree. You will get all sizes of fruit fly maggots in a culture, and even if it is something else, it will be food for your frogs. In any event, it isn't a parasite on the fruit flies.

i think it's hard to see the maggots unless you buy the blue mix. My dad likes the blue mix because it's his favorite color (he's a major Tar Heel fan). lol
