breeding imports

wolsniw Nov 08, 2004 09:28 PM

Im thinking about getting a adult pair of imported GTP's and was wondering if any one has had any sucess breeding them in their first year in captivity? Also how long does it ussually take them to get adjusted? Does them being from the southern hemisphere and the USA being in the northern hemisphere have a negative effect on their aclimation? Any info would be greatly (apreciated)sp

Thanks

I wouldn't be dead set on breeding imports during their first year, much less, the second or third. I got a sub adult import female in may of 2001 and she produced her first clutch this year. I would estimate her age to have been around 2-3 years old at the time of importation.....according to her size. Males can breed at small sizes, but females should be in tip top condition before breeding. You see why after you pull a female off her first clutch. Breeding takes a tremendous toll on the girls. I would concentrate on raising up some nice healthy captive bred yearlings rather than trying with WC the first go around. Most are capable of breeding sometime between 3-4 years of age. Not only do you have to worry about parasite loads in WC, as you stated, some animals may take years to acclimate to captive conditions. There are lots of CBB chondros available at great prices. Email me for links to other forums with more information on WC and import animals.....not just words, but experience shared by many chondro people.

Good luck.

I'm rethinking the whole import thing. it might be safer to buy cb. how are the eegs doing? are you or have you dropped the temps in the incubator the last week before they are expected to hatch?

This was an old pic. The eggs have long hatched at this point.....mother's day to be exact. I used a constant temp throughout incubation.
