i saw the biggest green anole ever

umop_apisdn Nov 08, 2004 09:29 PM

at the sc reptile show over halloween. it was selling for something like $20 labelled as a breeder, and i swear i would never pay $20 for a green anole but this guy really was bohemoth. im talking gargantuan. with his tail he must have been about a foot long. do green anoles normally grow to this size or was this a freak of nature? i mean i dont even remember seeing any anole that big far south!

If it was as big as you say, it wasn't a Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis). There have been unsubstatiated claims of a 12" length which includes the tail. A large male will be between 9-10". You either saw another species of Anole or an Iguana.

Are you sure it wasn't a Cuban Knight Anole? Those get much bigger

By "green anole" I assume you mean carolinensis, not just any green anole, so it probably was not an equestrius, but either a large cb, or likely it was Norops (anolis) biporcatus. Biporcatus Looks almost exactly like the green anole of the south eastern US(a. carolinensis), but a few cm bigger and different dewlap color. Norops biporcatus is located in Mexico down to Panama ( not sure of exact distribution in Mexico, getting peretsons guide soon, audobon is way outdated). Its known there as the green anole (sometimes called giant green anole).

There common in their range, but noone imports them that I know of.

sorry, but im 99% sure it was carolinensis. ive seen a lot of the anole species, and ive seen pictures of Norops biporcatus. it was just a huge green anole.
