Sexing baby Beardies

Barbedwirecat Nov 09, 2004 12:27 AM

Hi,
I have just purchased a 6" long baby beardie and i was wondering what the best way to sex it is. My vet(reptile and exotic) and me have tried gently probing, and have not been able to get but a few MM in, Is it possible that this is a female? I can see very small femoral pores (teeeeeeeny, but there) I notice no hemi-penal bulge, but when upset, it gets a dark beard. Should I do DNA testing? I have been to many Herp shows where they have beardies smaller than mine sexed, how do they do this as such a young age? My vet and me are both wondering---any suggestions would be helpful! I would rather not draw blood on such a small animal if possible.

Jesus don't probe it, these aren't snakes and you can do mega damage. As for how to tell you do it the same way as an adult, look for hemipenile bulges, they're just smaller. You can't always tell 100% at 6 weeks, but a good breeder should be able to give you a 90% accuracy. If you can't tell now give it a few weeks and try again. Hold the dragon in your hand pointing away from you, lift the tail about 90 degrees straight up, the hemipenile bulges will be a little above the vent, 1 bulge in the middle = female, 2 bulges with a divit in the middle = male.
