Mercury Vapor Bulbs?

Wake42 Nov 09, 2004 01:06 AM

okay i have heard some good things about these...just wondering a couple things about them...

do they use the dome reflectors? or is someother fixure needed?

i also read someting about if they are not straight up and down the burn out? (might be confused there?)

and i know they come with a waranty...but how does this work do you have to send them the bulb back or what?

if you have any pros/cons please let me know :D

I use the solar brite mercury vapor bulbs and have had wonderful success. In truth I have one that I don't use as UVA/UVB anymore but just as a heat source and it is still burning after three years. I have never had one die on me and I replace them once a year. The only trouble I have had is when first getting them shipped in I have had a couple not work and I send them back to the place I bought them from and they send out more. If it's been over 10 days and they go out then you have to ship the bulbs back to the manafacture to get a replacement. But I believe if they go out after 30 days then your out of luck but luckily that hasn't happened to me. I do have one that is cocked sidesays a little in the tank and it is still burning fine. Hope this helps. I have them both on beardeds and my ornate uromastyx breeders, I believe I am using 15 now at a time so I should definately know.

As far as I know only the ZooMed Powersun's have a complete 1 year guarentee. Some other bulbs have a warrentee that takes into account how long you had the bulb for, so if it died after 6 months you only get back half your money. I use a high quality dome hood for mine, it just needs to have a ceramic or porcelin base not plastic, mercury vapor bulbs can get very hot.

Yes make sure it is a 10 inch light fixture otherwise it will definitely burn out and make sure you don't move the bulb alot when its hot or it will also burn out so you are probably going to need one of those lamp stands that suspends the fixture over top of the cage.
