And there may be no more Wildhorse as we knew/know it due to some laws that is in place about spouses rights of more than 50% of ownership of an ex-wife of Robert or children. Louise Hammer has stated many times to me and my wife that if this occured ( the death of Bob ) and if the ex or whomever caused any problems............i will send my condolence to the family.
That sucks! I just talked to him face to face, on the 22nd of October. We just chatted for about 30 minutes. I hope Louise will keep it open for us herpers. They are definately herper friendly!!!

This is sad news. Wildhorse is the only place in Texas I really enjoyed staying at. I really hope this is not the end of Wildhorse. I wish his family well. He was a very kind person.

I send heartfelt condolences to Louise, and family and friends of Bobby. Always good folks to any visitors to the bend. True advocates for the area. I wish them all well. Peace, hugh
Wow! This is horrible news. The Hammers are one of the special things about the bend. Count your blessings if you took the time to know them, Bob was a kick in the ass. Loise is very special and I hope that we can help her in anyway she needs. Let me know if you have a way to help them (Loise, Rhonda and Keith) WE should show our appriciation for all Bob did for us.Charlie Bentley 503- 440 -2432 cbconst@charter.net
The obituary didn't make the Alpine Avalanche newspaper yet probably due to the paper being once a week and Bobs death being after the published weeks news, but i have this address that i have sent things to the Hammers before :
Louise Hammer
HC 65 Box 276C
Alpine, Texas. 79830
They would definintly like to hear from us herpers with cards.
The future of Wild Horse might be shakey as i said on another post. Besides that note, Louise just can't run the place by herself with Wanda and Grandchild. The son that does some work down there has a career and family ( I guess ) someplace else in the country. This is some of my speculations though. I had a long talk with Loiuse in June, July and Oct. on what if this happened. She ( bless her heart ) was pretty pesimistic. I hope that she can figure something out and keep the Wildhorse running.
I spent about 20 minutes with Louise on the phone this morning. I wish it could have been in person so that I could have given her a hug. She was there with Bob when he passed away. It was most likely a heart attack as he went very fast. She held him in her arms as he passed. She said as his head went back, he stared into her eye's and wanted to say something but the words could not come out. They were married for 37 years. Bob was cremated and his ashe's were put on the mountain behind wildhorse station (wildhorse mountain). She said that there were hundreds of people that showed up for the funeral. I wish I had known earlier. I would have flown down to attend. I told her it would not be the same down there if she closed up the place. She plans to continue on unless someone comes up unexpectedly. She is looking forward to seeing us all there next year. In fact the place is full right now with people from a motor cycle rally. She has a relative that will be coming in to assist her. I gave her the address to Kingsnake.com so she could come here to see the response's. She was happy to hear that people were writing in to the forum. The address that Mike posted (I think it was Mike) is correct. I am sure she would appreciate hearing from us. I always felt like I was part of their family when I was there. Last time I was their I needed a noose for lizards. Bob provided a long thin pole from his shop and Louise the thread. His face is etched in my mind. They are very special people. I wish Louise well, and Bob will be missed..Ric Blair
I too talked to mrs. hammer this morning to express my sympathy on her loss. I told her a lot of people were concerned for her and would like to express their sympathy. the address mike posted is correct for all interested. mr. hammer was a fine man, and all that knew him will miss him. it was always a pleasure to see him and the family when staying at wild horse station. louise, wanda and their family are in my thoughts and prayers/jon
Yeah,It will be a real shame if the place is closed or sold to non herp friendly people?I remember the first year I stayed there (96) and Ric Blairs kid took all my money in our afternoon poker games.
Remember that Jon,
Anyways,I will be sending them a card as well.
Shannon
ya i remember that, darn that kid, lol!!/jon
Man, that is a bummer. Bob is gonna be ok now and I hope the same is true for Louise and family. I wish we could be there for them now but we will all be there for them this spring.
Condolences

It is a sad day for all of us in the herp community that visit West Texas. I don't think everyone has heard about this otherwise you would see a bunch more posts...
The Hammer family will be in our prayers...
Best Wishes,
Steven Owens
Our condolences to Louise, Wanda, & Keith. The Hammers were always wonderful, gracious hosts whenever we stayed there.
To have a place w/ such nice owners where herpers were welcomed, not just tolerated or worse, made Wildhorse Station truly a great place to stay. Not only that, you throw in the setting of the Xmas mountains and you have the best spot in Westexas to stay while visiting the area.
We wish you the best,
Doug & Nancy Beckwith
Our condolences to Louise & her family.
