Impacted Baby Dragon???

dannygirl8 Nov 09, 2004 09:48 AM

Just got a 4 wk old dragon on Sunday. Put him in sand (pet kind) like I was told too. Fed him mealy worm like I was told too. He ate about 12 tiny crickets yesterday. Doesn't seem too interested in the veggies that I gave him. He has only poohed Sun and possible early Mon am. He ate the crickets yesterday evening. I took the sand out yesterday and put paper towel. I was completely misinformed by the seller and the pet store about the sand, etc. Could he be impacted or do they not pooh a whole lot. Seems after eating 12 crickets yesterday at about 7pm that he would have poohed by now. Please advise what I should do. He is acting just fine. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,

If he's acting normal you're probably safe. Give him a warm bath, that often will relax them and spurr them to go. Glad to here you got rid of the sand, also don't give him mealies anymore (at least until he's bigger, and only then occassionaly). Babies typically do go quite often. It is unusual that he hasn't gone, but if he's active and moving around fine I wouldn't be overly concerned about one day.

Good News, I called my husband and he said he finally poohed. I just wish I had know about this forum and became educated a little earlier. Everyone is so helpful.

Hi
i agree with him mealies r not so good food for beardies.
i not even give them to my adults.
bathing a beardie:
shoulder deep feel with youre wrist if its not to hot.
let him in for 15 20 minuts most of the time they wil poop then.
you can also masage his belly little bit and stroke towards his vent very centle.
colord sands and calsi sands r bad for beardies and other toungh flikking animals.
i use a type of wached playsand witout silica and heated 400 degree.
they use it for pignons here in the netherlands.
i have never got problems with that sand.

Sand, especially the Calci-sands and mealworms are two of the more common impacting things in small bearded dragons. Althought it sounds like you have found out in time and your baby will be okay, here is an article on impactions, mostly about bearded dragons, the whys, hows and how to avoid.

Best to you and him!
