skater...crix set up

lele Nov 09, 2004 12:37 PM

I use layers of plastic canvas on the bottom of the tank. The poop falls thru. it works great! You just need to have it cut so there are no rising edges where the crix will climb under and die, also not good for pinheads.

This is without the plastic canvas that I would use for pinheads

here is with PC

here's a closeup of black pc covering soil on a pot.

you can get plastic canvas at any place that sells crafts and it is very cheap - lots of colors, too! It's less than 40cents per sheet.

Lele, what exactly does the plastic mesh do? Other than making the cage look extremely clean. You must have just cleaned before taking those pics! I try to keep the cricket food in nice little dishes, but they grab onto stuff and drag it all around. Messy little devils!

I haven't noticed crickets to be horribly smelly like I had heard. I just sweep out poop every other day or so, and take out dried up fruit/veggies and replace them with fresh ones.

I have a horrible time finding cardboard egg cartons. I buy eggs at Meijer and every single size comes in styrofoam. I'm worried that if I give them styrofoam they will eat it and then it will be bad for Diesel.

Hi M - since the poop falls thru it is less apt to be dragged around with the food - it just "disappears." Some folks have minor (me) or major allergies to the poop. I have to wear a little mask when I clean them out (took ahwile for me to make the connection). Since I have been doing it this way, I have to do a major cleaning much less frequently. I just freshen food and remove dead ones (they are the real stinkies! PU!) but the bottom is almost spotless

As for the containers I now use the plastic lids of 32oz. yogurt containers. The little lip helps to keep in the dry food, but most that gets pulled out goes down thru the mesh, too. I have 3-4 layers of the pc.

you can purchase egg cartons from feed stores (not sure where you live) I also get the green pint and quart fruit cartons from them. I buy the cert organic/free range eggs from a local farm (in Maine) and they are packed in clear plastic! (seems counter-intuitive to the CO/FR - need to email them about that) but a neighbor and a friend collect the paper ones for me

So the pc just generally helps to keep the floor (and the food) clean. I got tired of the food mess and the poop getting everywhere.

you can use cardboard cup holders from 7-11 Mel...i always "accidentally" have 2 stuck together when i buy coffee for the guys at work....

i use a small reptile water dish as a feeding area...they can't drag the food out of it

Oh, very sneaky! I like it. I would steal the toilet paper rolls from the bathroom, but they lock the toilet paper to the dispenser!

that looks great. my crix set up is less than ideal. its 5 gallon bucket with a big hole cut out of the top and a mesh screen stapled over it. i just end up tossing in orange slices and such and pouring in oatmeal and other cerals. i have a really hard time cleaning it. i order 1000 crickets at a time and it only gets cleaned out when i run out and order new crix. i think im just going to go buy a large plastic kritter keeper from petco for them. ill definitely try that stuff at the bottom to trap the poop.

uuggg just typed a long post, hit the wrong button and i gotta start over. in a nutshell: my crix set up sucks and is nearly impossible to clean. ill probally go pick up a larg plastic kritter keeper for them. great idea with the stuff at the bottom to trap the poop, ill definitely use that. thanks.
