Silly Question...

-JayDog- Nov 09, 2004 02:25 PM

I just got some wax worms as a snack for my leos. I'm fairly new to geckos and have never seen waxworms before. So my question is: Do waxworms move at all? My leos only go after food that is moving. And these new waxworms are not moving at all. They're also super soft. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Jason

yah they are super soft, they will really squish down.

However they are supposed to move, that's partially why leos love them so much.... Are they cold? where they refridgerated? Try leaving them in a warmer spot or what i do with mealworms,
smush their heads :D

yup, they should move - if u just pulled em out of the fridge, leave em out for a little while til they wake up. they move REALLY slow and yes, they're normally soft and white/cream colored. if they start turning darker while in a warm spot it may be getting ready 2 morph into a moth. if it turns dark while refrigerated, it's probably dead.

speaking of waxworms, what can you feed them? i've read honeyvcomb wax is excellent for them but I live in the city, I doubt i'd be able to find it. Petsmart always puts them in woodchips... can they eat that?

the woodchips are pretty much there to hold the worms in hibernation for a little while longer when removed from the fridge into room temperature - so while you're driving home, they're probably still hibernating.

if you cant get honeycomb wax, you can just get some bran OR some dog food and mix it with some honey from the grocery store... mix em together and after it dries up just crumble it up into your wax worm cup. when you leave them at room temp and they get more active, they'll start munchin away and if u can't get honey, maybe u can try the dog food mashed up, but not too positive on that one~

what about sweetened healthy cerial (like Kashi) would that work?

aimee_s Nov 11, 2004 04:13 PM

mMm, i'm not sure, but you're more than welcome to give it a try. i understand that they are big on honey so i don't know if they like healthy cereal

try it out and if it's a success, let me know so i can use that for them too!
