IguanaBrasil Nov 09, 2004 04:35 PM

I have 4 iguanas and they have about 7 months. I build a cage with 8,5ft length X 6ft wide X 9ft tall I'm think about put they together... Will I have problems ? (I'll can separate them in the end of 2005, when I will finalize a place next to my house..)

no, no, and no. Iguanas are very territorial. and the signs of dominance problems are really subtle in these guys. Have you ever seen iggs sleep on top of each other? the one on top is dominant. And the one that eats first? dominant. And that can stress the non-dominant one(s). They can appear to get along for a long time, then BOOM! you come home and one is injured or dead. I don't really mean to scare you or anything, but it is very risky to house them together. Is there a way you can stick dividers in the cage? At the VERY least, provide multiple basking, eating, and bathing areas. A trick that parakeet and cockatiel breeders use (when colony breeding) is to always provide more nest boxes than there are pairs, that way nobody fights (as much) over one. I'm sure there's folk here who have much more experience with this than I do. good luck!!!

Don't house them together unless you are prepared for injured iguana's.

You might be able to pull it off if you were to get them fixed like the free roamers we have.... but still you are taking your chances.

According to my past experience (thats not a rule only my personal experience)you can have them together until they reach sexual maturity around 18 months. Then if you have more than one male they will try to kill each other. If you have one male and three females i dont know what it will happen. You have to ask people that have more than one female in the same cage.

I've been keeping an adult male & female together in an enclosed room for about a year without a problem. I believe each situation is different depending on the personalities of each. I've had my male for 8 years and introduced the female without incidence. You may want to put them together for a short period of time and watch for signs of aggression. Good luck.

4 iguanas in one cage! very bad idea we have got 4 that have been living together and are now 16months old. because we live in south africa we put them out in a cage in the sun when it is a sunny day, then one sunday i went out to spray them with water, and to my dismay one iguana's leg (Stert) was off just above the knee! the culpritt (Julius) was sitting over the 2 smallest (Tina and Wilma) at the bottom of the cage with blood on his mouth, we had to rush the off legged one to the vet, who had to amputate the leg just below the shoulder, so my personal advice to you is to not keep them together in one cage, Julius now is in his own cage, Stert, wilma and tina now share a cage together. PS. Stert is now doing great although he only has 3 legs and that after the vet said that she was almost sure that he would not live during the amputation or after it! It has now been 3 months after his amputation!
