Baby beardie started biting

gavinclews Nov 09, 2004 05:26 PM

My baby is about 2 and a half months old but is a fairly big one. It started biting a while ago but it was too small to hurt but now he is getting bigger he is starting to do some damage mainly to the end of my finger!! Does anyone know when it will stop doing this as i have a few adults now but this is the youngest i have had. He is a nasty little bugger!!

I never had a problem with Hades biting me. Do you wash your hands in between animals? He could be smelling the others on you. Try Wipe Out 5 hand sanitizer, you can get it at pet stores, it's blue gel that disinfects and kills 99.9% of bacteria.

If you do wash your hands then I say try putting your hand in his cage more slowly.

Or you can put a piece of lettuce in his mouth when he opens it up that way he's too busy trying to eat instead of bite.

Dunno if your a girl or one of those weird guys.... but nail polish encourages biting.

My babies were a bit nippy when they were younger. It happens sometimes I worked with one for awhile that was so foul tempered we nicknamed him "grimmace" but even he came around.

Make sure that when he is "at home" he feels safe and secure. A nervous beardie is going to be more apt to bite. Make sure he has a spot where he can hide completely from anything he percieves to be threatening. You might even try covering part of the cage to give him an area of dark recluse.

If he is calm and content in his home, then just make sure to hold him frequently (as long as he does not appear too stressed out) hold him gently on one hand inside his enclosure so he doesn't feel so scared and so if he jumps you wont lose him. As he gets used to being handled you can slowly take him out of his enclosure. The world is a scary place to a little beardie!

Also, try hand feeding peices of lettuce or the occasional mealworm (if he is big enough, i forget how big you said he was, if you did) or waxworm.

Good luck! Keep posting if you need any help
