repta-lawn substrate

herper1990 Nov 09, 2004 06:23 PM

I know your not supposed to use a substrate that the iguana can ingest but I found this one called repta lawn. you lay down this sheet things sprinkle seeds on top and water them until they sprout and grow grass. the label says its edible and its made by fluker farms which seems to be a reputable source. Do you think it would be ok?

There are a couple of problems that I can foresee might occur with this product. I'd worry about mold or fungal growth in the planting substrate. I'd also be a little concerned about insects invading it. I'm also a bit skeptical about being able to grow a lawn indoors.

The main reason that I wouldn't purchase this product is because it's offered by Fluker Farms. Why promote a company that breeds and imports hundreds of thousands of baby iguanas ( and Bearded Dragons) each year?

Good point about the manufacturer!

I did try this product a couple of years ago for my Green Ameiva's enclosure and it was interesting to say the least. Some parts of it grea, some didn't. It was patchy, didn't like heat (why it would NOT work in an iguana enclosure) and was overall messy. I would not reccomend it, nor would I use it again.

Thanks for the advice, if repta-lawn would not work what would you suggest. I was just wondering if there were any substrates that looked nice and would be safe for iggs. Thanks responds would be extremly appreciated.

With Igs, it is better to NOT use substrate at all. What I use for most of my enclosures is floor laminate. You can pick it up at Home Depot or some place similar in squares. You just buy how many you need and cut to fit, then tear off the paper backing and press to stick. It makes for a safe surface that cannot be eaten, plus it is REALLY easy to clean.... you just spray (antibac) and wipe up! You can buy it in any color, pattern, whatever you prefer.

This is a pic of my male hovering over his food bowl after eating. I took the pic because he has that look that says "You better not touch my bowl", yet his back legs are just too comical! You can see the laminate I used in his enclosure in the picture too. Hope this helps.

Here is another pic of the enclosures for my Crested Gecko's. This pic was taken the day after construction so they are pretty bare inside, but again you can see the laminate I use. This is a different coloration chosen to match the green paint.
