Beardie biting his own tail!

bcloudbusting Nov 09, 2004 08:28 PM

Hi I have a male bearded dragon who is 5 months old and caged with his sister. He appears to be biting his own tail. The tip fell off, it healed, but is starting to bite it again. It does not look necrotic and is red and irritated (like little sores or ulcers). I am stumped. The other dragon is fine. It also appears that one of his toes was like this a few months back and no longer has a nail now, but redness is gone. Is there any skin condidtions and treatments that can be suggested? Please let me know. I have been researching, but not coming up with anything.

Thanks a ton,

Brenn

I had a girl that did this to me once, dumb dumb animal. What finally stoped her was I took the finger off a cotton glove and slipped her tail in and then taped it down. I also packed the wound with neosporin first. I'm not sure if it was the taste of the neosporin or the cotton but she finally stopped after a few days and several inches of tail. She had a slight nip when she came to me and my guess is that it itched and it was her way of scratching it but don't know for sure. Be sure to watch for infection, even after the neosporin it still got infected and took several shots of baytril before I could get it under control.

And seperate that 5 month old dragon from his sister ASAP. If you dont' you will have 50 inbred babies and a dead mother. They can and have been bred at 5 months old.

yep. the injured / infected area is bothering the bd and so they are doing the only thing they can ....
just like a dog may make his own wound worse by chewing on it.

be ready to separate too really soon - 5 month old siblings are rapidly approaching sexual maturity, and you definately do not want these two to breed.

as for own tail biting, thats a new one on me - you may have to wrap the tail or smear something on the tail to make it taste bad, i'm not sure.
