you could also mention the handiness of having a fire place! after having my collection grow by about 4 or 5 times its original size a year ago, and putting up with a 2 day period of power outage at my last place, i made sure to get a place with a fireplace this time. going thru 2 days of snow with absolutely no power in north carolina is not a common thing, but i learned from that experience that i really needed a fireplace for such a circumstance. luckily all i had at the time of the outage were a pair of green anoles and a red eared slider. the turtle was fine, but my anoles were frigid. they're not used to being handled, but they were so cold they could barely move, so i took it upon myself to re-aquaint the pair with being handled, and they eagerly perched themselves on my chest for the 2 frozen days. they're alive and healthy still today. overnight, i used the same tecnique gardeners would use to protect their outdoor plants from frost...i put a sheet over their enclosure to maintain what little heat was left. as you can imagine, i couldnt let them stay attached to me all night long, i'd surely roll over and squash em. but yes eve, you made some good points and back then i didnt even know about heat packs. now with so many geckos i am happy to be secure that i can light a fire downstairs and the heat will creep upstairs into my room. and if its still too cold then, i can move the tanks downstairs to give them greater proximity to a heat source. i dont anticipate another power outage for 2 days, but i will always have a PLAN for one.

nice info eve!

Your are just below me, hehehehehe a few states, I'm Up the coast a bit in NJ and our winters get pretty dang cold.

And I have to admit, that is a comforting thought as we also have a fire place.

I would think we would all have to be careful of the fumes though, would it in any way harm the lizards? Ours is a gas fireplace?

thats a very good question. fortunately our fireplace is a wood burning one, so we have little to worry about fumes. as long as the hood is kept open, while the fire is on the heat alone should push the majority of the fumes up thru the chimney. as long as you arent putting your reptiles on the mantlepiece, i wouldnt really consider fumes a threat. the key is to remember to open that lil latch in the chimney so it can vent. otherwise youll have fumes AND smoke to worry about. of course these guys couldnt be kept too close to an active fireplace anyway, too much heat would probably kill them. i was thinking more along the lines of simply having the fireplace to heat the house because without electricity theres no other good way to heat the house.
