rats and tumors, suffering? feed right away?

neilgolli Nov 10, 2004 08:40 AM

I've got one of my best breeder rats that in the last week has developed an enourmus tumor on her neck. Is she suffering, will she continue to breed, how long will she last with it, and should I just toss her in with boa's, balls, bloods or Juno the black throats enslosure?

Thanks, PS, are tumors a form of cancer?

The tumors are not normally cancerous, but it is possible. As long as it is not afecting her movement is shouldn't be bothering her. How old is she? Is she still breeding? As long as she is still eating, drinking, acting normal and having babies I would keep her around.

Ty, she is around 9 months and averages 14 pups per litter and is a great mom, and while she is still eating and drinking, this lump is twice the size I've ever had on any of my rats, its litteral larger than her entire head, going from the back of her ear to her upper back.

Are you sure it is a tumor and not an abscess. Fast growing and not in a mammary area I would suspect an abscessed bite wound. Either poke around and see if it has an opening.....clean it out and treat it or put her down. She is not gonna spontaneously improve and at that size she is NOT comfortable. Remember....prey animals are designed not to show pain or discomfort, so you have no idea if she is bothered by it.
I personally DO NOT feed off tumored or abscessed animals. Others do. Here they go in the brush pile.
