a couple questions

yoshis_mom Nov 10, 2004 12:47 PM

Ok, I had to take 2 animals home from my job the other night, one of them being a Uromastyx. I thought it was going to be temporary, but it's looking permanant to me, unless I find him a nice, loving home.

I have posted a picture, I don't know if it's too dark to tell, but does anyone know what type of Uro this is?

Is there anything else they eat besides waxworms & crickets?

Thanks a lot!

It looks like a Mali Uro to me.

They eat endive, escarole, custard and mustard greens (all of these are the nutricious forms of lettuce, you can feed red leaf, but it has no nutritional value what so ever).

Green beans and green peas frozen ( put in a bowl and run hot water over them and then dump the water, repeat this about 3 or 4 more times until warm).

Good luck and I hope you decide to keep him/her. They really are terrific animals.

The picture was a little dark for me - I couldn't tell what it is.

Are you planning to keep him then? If so, I would highly recommend reading the care sheets at the Deer Fern Farms website: {url=http://www.deerfernfarms.com/Uromastyx_Care.htm]link[/url]. It's a long page but the information there is extrememly important for keeping a healthy uro! There are also many photos of the common species there and you can likely identify yours.

Crickets and worms should be an occasional treat only - uros are generally herbivorous and the majority of their diet should be made up of leafy greens like dandelion, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, endive, escarole, etc. Do not feed spinach, chard, cabbage, or lettuces as they are either nutritianlly empty or they bind nutrients. Many other things go into a healthy diet, but switching him over to greens is a good start.

Welcome to the forum and feel free to ask any questions you need to!

I have a loving home for them , if you're looking to give them up for adaoption. Other than that they can be easily taken care of just read as much as you can about husbandry.

If you have two extra pairs of tweezers you can hold the cricket down using one pair and rip off his back legs with another. It will slow them down.

Or you can catch them and put them in a container of some sort and put them in the freezer for about 45 seconds, it will really slow them down if you don't want to tweeze legs off.
