Update on Morpheus and some questions

dmlove Nov 10, 2004 06:52 PM

Well Morpheus is only about 18 inches long, and has been in hibernation fora bout 4-5 weeks. He has come out for a half a day at a time to bask, but thats it. I offered food but he didnt eat. I do spray him when he comes out and he drinks. How long will this go on for? I miss the little guy! LOL. I know in bearded dragons they go into brumation for many months! But of course they are two different species so i would appreciate any info! And tips!

ALSO im building an extra large cage - 8 ft X 4 ft X 2.5 ft and i was wondeirng when i should put him in there. It will have 1.5 ft of substrate so he could get lost if put in there too little. LOL anyone have any tips on when to put him in?

And feeding, i feed him mostly supers, crix, and grapes. He eats grapes on and off. I want to give him mice or pinkys. SHould they be live (pinkys) and how should i offer them? Do they recognize them as food or do i need to show them somehow>?

Thanks

I'm in the same place you are but mine isn't in burmation. She is eating half of a fuzzy mouse now and she hasn't gone into burmation because i have a night heat light. She is currently in a 6 X 2 X 2.5 so you could probably move her in now and section off 2 ft or so.

With my Tegu I kept him in an 8 foot enclosure from about 2 months on. I just put a board down the middle, started small, and then moved the board over exposing the entire cage as warranted by his growth.

As far as how long your tegu will brumate it is anyones guess. Each tegu is a little different, probably not more than 2-3 months though. Be careful not to feed to much food before they go down for the big nap if they do. It can rot in their stomach creating nasty problems. Best of luck!
