how to catch a Tokay to clean the cage?

clp Nov 10, 2004 07:51 PM

I know this is a silly question but How do i catch a tokay Gecko so i can clean out his cage. I have slow animals except 2 tokay geckos. I need to clean out their cages. How do i control them to clean out the cage? I dont want to have to run after them.

My chameleons and Monkey tailed skinks don't move that fast.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

My G. vittatus cage has a cork tube that he hides in. When I clean the cage he usually runs into the tube, then I just remove the tube and put it in a pillow case until I'm finished cleaning.

Are you totally tearing the tank up or just spot cleaning.

Mine tend to run for their hides and stay out of my way while I'm cleaning up their tank.

Heres the easiest, less stressfull way I use to catch a Tokay in a tank if needed. When a Tokay can't see you it is less fierce. I use a wash cloth or small hand towel. Drape it in over the Tokay covering its body and head so it can't see what your doing. Now use your other hand to catch it and keep its head covered. Keep a firm careful grasp and gently remove it from what its attached to. Now you can keep it covered in the towel and relocate it to somewhere while you clean. They usually don't squirm and try to get away as much when their heads are kept covered.

I need to do a better hide for them.... I have branches and such, but no good hide. I have lots of fish. and you can catch them inside a hide also.

Would PVC make a HIDE? I understand the towel thing also... HIde seems easier..

PVC works fine as a hide, but in my opinion it looks pretty awful. If you can obtain a large enough section of bamboo, you'd probably find it looks way better than a plastic tube.

At the very least, you should lean a slab or two of cork bark against the walls as a hide. Won't help as far as catching the gecko, but he'll feel a lot more secure that way.
