So I've had a bunch of sick geckos and two kinds of fecals were negative, suspected bacterial infection. Went to vet twice last week. On the 23rd vet gave one gecko a Baytril shot to see if that helped. WAs not noticing improvement, so on Friday's visit, vet prescribed another shot of Baytril for the one gecko for me to give on Saturday, Flagyl (enough for all affected geckos), and at my suggestion a cephalosporin antibiotic (I had had another gecko a couple months ago that had a bacterial infection and was cured with cephalosporin). Directions were to give Flagyl to all except one I was testing the cephalosporin on, give the second Baytril shot to the one gecko on Saturday. But if gecko on Cephalosporin got better, to give that to all.
So last night the gecko that I have been giving the oral cephalosprin since Friday (Cefa-Drops) got all excited when I put mealworms in, and went after them bigtime- which was great as she was the sickest one, she had not been eating and was the thinnest of all. And today, her stool looks nearly normal- not that weird color & smell that they others have had.
So just talked to vet who advised me to keep giving the flagyl to the geckos I started it in (he says that it won't hurt them, and it is not advisable to stop treatment once started as there can be resistance if there are any underlying organisms that may be affected by it), but to start giving all the cefa-drops.
I still have an appointment with the specialist in Berkeley for tomorrow, but I my vet suggested I call and see if I can move to later in the week, and see if other geckos have similar improvement on the cefa drops, with the idea I would cancel it if they do. I'm going to call and explain the situation to him and see what he advises.
But anyway, I am very happy as we seem to have found the right antibiotic for the geckos, and my formerly sickest gecko is now getting much better!!!
