Help identify wood

gothra Nov 10, 2004 08:52 PM

Last week I bought a piece of wood for my leos, when I scrub it with a brush in detergent water, and when I bake it in the oven, it gave off a rather strong smell. I let it air out for 5-6 days, I could hardly notice the scent now, even with my nose on the wood. So, I need to make sure it is not cedar before I put it in my leo's cage.

I am really sorry if this sounds stupid, but I have absolutely no idea on the different type of woods; the tag on the wood says "Sand-blasted roots" and I bought it from an aquarium shop. Here it is:

what you have there is grapewood and/or roots. Cedar is a hard wood and would not be gnarly and curly like that. I'm not sure what the odor was. Do you know what cedar smells like? Either way, it wouldn't hurt to sterilize it one more time, but after that, feel safe putting your leos on it.

Hey! I have a piece of that stuff, or at elast one that looks exactly the same...It dose smell kinda funny, and the first time i soaked it in water it turned the water a funny colour, but i had it in with my whites for almost a year now and no problems at all, it also spent some time in with my leos when i first got it and also no problems there (yes, it was sanitised in between, thats when i noticed the colour in the water)
