Feeding questions (easy)

tim5580 Nov 10, 2004 09:07 PM

I see on a lot of care sheets to feed beardeds 3 meals a day, like people. I was considering getting one, but don't want to get it if I can't meet it's needs. I usually work 4-5 am to afternoons and I might switch to night shift starting around 9pm or so working 12 hr shifts. Is it OK to maybe leave them salads or mealworms, superworms, or silkworms for morning and give them crickets at night? I don't want the crickets bothering them if they aren't eaten. Can they thrive on 2 bigger meals a day or can 3 meals be spaced out over afternoon and evening?
And another thing, will they chase food down, or wait for it to walk by?
Or maybe an adult would be better if it doesn't need to eat as often?

A healthy beardie young or adult will try and pounce on about anything. As long as you can give them a 12 hour day or be consistant with something close to that, give them fresh greens and occasional (2-3) times a week, you should be able to keep an adult. Young beardies have more needs, but I have no problem working 12 hour days and make time for mistings, feedings and clean-up for 7 bearded dragons. Do a little more research, but beardies are not difficult to keep, but like any herp, they require a decent amount of care.

I'd have no problem doing all the other stuff. I am just not available morning, noon, and evening every day to put crickets in. Which is why I thought silkworms for breakfast and crickets for other meals. Silkworms just sit there and wait to be eaten.

What I do is give them around 15 crix or so dusted in the mornings. That is when they will eat the most and dustings are so important to young beardies. Then I throw silkies on the salad for them to munch on during the day. The silkies hang out on the salad and eat it and the movement draws the dragon to the salad. In my experience they eat more of their salad this way too. Then, when I get home I give them some more silkies if they don't have any left. Works great for me! You might alos consider putting the lights on a timer so you won't have to mess with turning them on and off at the same time every night.

You'll have to kinda learn your beardie too. They may eat more than 15 crix at one sitting depending on size and their appetite. If you have all the other stuff in their enclosure though, (greens and silkies) I wouldn't worry to much about the crix bothering the dragon. The silkies are much easier prey and they will always pick on something smaller or less able to protect itself.... I've watched a couple left over crix almost completely devour a 1" silk worm. The crix also like to munch on the salad, my guess is the moisture? Just make sure your not putting so many crix in that htere is alot of them left over. In my opinion a few isn't gonna hurt though if you have the other stuff in the enclosure.
