Yes, my 4.5 foot male just did 4 days ago! It was a medium rat, a pretty good sized one!

By "tackle down" do you mean "to eat" a dead rat, or "to subdue and kill" a live rate?

There are corns that get large enough for rats, but there are precious few corns that are big enough to kill a live rat without injury, and even if they can get it done, the risk of serious injury to a corn in such cases would seem to be way out of proportion with any conceived "benefit" one might suggest.

I would "highly" recommend not feeding live rats to any corn, regardless of its size and strength!

Hope that helps a bit...

I switch my corn snakes to prekilled fresh rats when they are about 6 months old. I start with day old pinkies and go up from there as the snake grows. I do this because I breed rats in my home but I won't raise mice (too stinky). The biggest corn I have (5 feet long) can eat a medium rat but not a full grown one.

Here's a pic of a corn I found in Florida. The only reason why we found it was because my friend heard a sqeaking noise. He remarked, "That sound like a rodent in distress." We followed the sound and this medium-sized snake had just finished killing an adult rat, which seemed impossibly large for it to swallow. So I fully believe they can kill adult rats. In captive situations it is best not to offer meals that are too large though, as they may cause the snake to regurgitate.
