Back from Costa Rica, (boa related)

DMexotics Nov 10, 2004 10:42 PM

It was quite weird to catch my first boa in the wild. Picking up and handling the boa was very normal. Coming across it in the wild and realizing that they were part of the fauna here seemed odd for some reason. Anyway, I was very happy. This one was found on the Pacific side near Playa Hermosa during an ATV ride. More pics at the link below.

what a dream vacation! I felt like I was there-Costa Rica is beautiful! You didn't touch those poison arrow frogs, did you? I heard that in the wild, even if you touch them, the poison excreted from their skin actually penetrates the pores of our skin and make you extremely sick or die. Don't actually know if that's true or not, just like to throw it out as fact for kicks.

I am not sure how accurate these various suggestions and examples are but we hired a guide that was very educated in herbal medicine and the ways of the shaman. We were instructed to not touch the frogs, they were very toxic. He pointed out plants that were both good and bad. Some gave off some sort of oily substance that if rubbed in the eyes by accident would permanently blind you. There is the tropics version of poison ivy, an anti-itch remedy, an insect repellent, the plant from which the composition for Viagra was discovered, one plant was THE most hallucinogenic(sp?) substance known, mushrooms that are proving to be a very probable cure for cancer in the future as well as many other mushrooms from which medicines are already derived. I have some knowledge of tropical biology but didn't mention anything other than my desire to find and photograph snakes. The guide never was inaccurate or went overboard about the things that I did already know so I believe he was extremely well-educated in the local flora and fauna. This trip was the most educational one I have ever had(although they are all educational). The complex world of the leaf-cutter ant colonies just blew me away but thats probably for another forum, LOL.
