filter for wildcaught frog

Tara May 15, 2003 12:15 PM

will a filter for a wildcaught grey tree frog freak him out? I assume he has to have one so he has a clean environment, and also so it does not smell. I was thinking a duetto because its submergible...okay?

You don't have to have a filter for him - he can use a water bowl which is changed daily and the poopies can be removed when found. There are set ups which can be used using filters for frogs - but the water still has to be changed frequently - and it is not a necessity. I don't yet have a care page for Gray's on my site but you care for them the same as Green tree frogs only lowering their temps about 2 or so degrees. I'll include a link to my GTF page on my site - you may also want ot check out the husbandry page which covers basic guidelines for frog care as well as the links page which has links to some great frog places. Hope this helps!

Well I can't change her water bowl daily because she is in half land and half water, so she doesn't have one.
Also is it normal for her to only climb down off the wall when she eats, then go back up there for like a day and a half?
Thanks for the info!

Half land and half water tanks aren't ideal for tree frogs. Yes it is normal for her to go up the glass - in nature this would be up in the trees - and sleep all day long coming down at night to hunt for food and soak for rehydration, and no they don't always get out and about every night. Keep in mind that tree frogs are fairly poor swimmers and can easily drown. They only need a water area large enough for them to lie in shallow enough to only cover their back legs. A tree frogs need lots of plants, limbs, etc to hide in, ground room to hunt and only a small area of water. If a tree frog is spending time during the day on the ground, something is likely wrong with it. I hope this helps a little and also that you'll read the pages on my site that I mentioned before. The more you learn about tree frogs, the better you can care for yours and the happier she'll be.

You have this frog in the wrong set up. This animal needs to be in at least a 20 gallon high.
I suggest that you let this tree frog go and then learn about the species and get a proper set up before getting another. It is not fair to the frog to make it suffer while you are learning about it, all of this should have been done before hand. Checkout Becki's web site and followed her advice as well.
