Feeding questions

Turtlegirl Nov 11, 2004 11:42 AM

Hi,

Well I've had my (well actually he's my dad's, but I mostly take care of him) Sulcata for almost 2 weeks now.
I got him at the Greenville, S.C show. He is a year old, and probably about 4 inches long. - Is that about an average size?
He seems to be doing great, he is VERY active, and eats like a horse! lol, I didn't really want to get him at first (lol I went to the show to buy snakes, and hadn't planned on coming home with a Tortoise) but I'm deffintaly warming up to the little guy!

He is currently housed in a 40 gallon rubbermaid containor, and has a uvb light, as well as a basking light.
He has a small water bowl (which I have not seen him drink out of yet) and a shoe box with a hold cut in it filled with hay that he sleeps in.
Half of the substrate in his cage is newspaper, and the rest is Timothy hay (he LOVES to burrow in it.) He also has a cuttlefish bone that I have not seen him do anything with yet.
Does this setup sound alright?

I have been feeding him dark leafy greens (Musterd, Collard...) with calcium powder, and we orderd some Mazuri Torotise food that should be getting here any day now. How much of his diet should the Torotise food make up? Should I feed him every day, or every-other day, and how much should I feed him? I have been giveing him a big handful of calcium dusted greens, (sometimes mixed with vegatables and sometimes fruit as a treat) every day, sometimes every other day, and he usually eats it all, or most of it. I have also seen him eating a little bit of the Timothy hay bedding.
Should I be feeding him more, or less than I am? I want to make sure he's eating enough, but I don't want to over-feed him either... Also, how often should I be soaking him?
lol, sorry 4 all the questions!
Thanks!!

It sounds like you have a pretty good setup.

I always suggest feeding Mazuri once a week for Sulcatas. Give it as much as it can eat in one sitting and then remove it.

You didn't mention temperatures... make sure he has a hotspot of at least 100F.

A humid hide has also proven to be beneficial but make sure it is a warm humid hide.

I also suggest soaking daily or every other day in the least.

This with what you have already done should be fine... for a little while.
