When I have gotten new wood, I have washed it thoroughly with a scrub brush and hot water, then put it in the oven at about 350 degrees. I check it every so often (20 minutes) to make sure it's not burning or anything. I cook it for a couple hours, then take it out, let it cool thoroughly, and put it in the cage.
For wood that was too large for the oven, I have soaked it for an hour or so in the bathtub with water and a small amount of bleach. Then to rinse, soak it in clean water overnight, drain and refill and let it soak for the whole next day, then drain and refill for one more overnight soak. Let dry and use (as long as the wood doesn't have any bleach smell at all).
