Ant Invasion

northstar951 Nov 11, 2004 03:11 PM

Alright, I have a single RETF in a 55 gallon tank with all kinds of nice leafy things and circulating water and whatnot.. I also have noticed that with the coming of winter and the ants deciding they want to come inside where its warm, that they've also decided they want to live in my frog tank. Now I know that frogs eat bugs (obviously... ) but these are the little tiny black ants that I really can't imagine him eating, and I wondered if they are an immediate threat to him, and if so what I should do about it. I can't exactly bug bomb the frog tank... what can you do about a colony of ants that could potentially overwhelm your frog? Not to mention I don't want them crawling around in my house to begin with... any advice would be lovely.

i'd completly change the substrate, throw out the old stuff, and wash off all the plants and tank to remove anything else. Basically just redo the whole tank

I think that a key thing to look at here is the fact that the ants have nothing to eat. Identify the specie of ant and find out what exactly they need. I'm almost sure they won't get it from your frog enclosure.
I introduced a kind of moss into a vivarium a while back, and shortly after discovered an ant colony had moved in with it. To make a long story short, they died, and peace was restored!

You HAVE to change the tank. I had a baby white's tree frog and an ant problem (the little bitty black ones like you said you have). I went away for the weekend, my roommate checked on the frog in the morning, no ants, no problems, and when he came home from work that night ants had taken over the ENTIRE tank and the only thing that was left of my frog was the skeleton. It had been only 18 hours, tops. You HAVE to change everything and get rid of them, and get some ant traps to keep around the tank to kill them in the future. Don't let the same happen to your frog...

Good luck.

This happened to me a while ago too... I had 4 RETF froglets in a tank, and the ants attacked and killed them all. I haven't kept any frogs at all since then, until I found that little pacific Tree frog. I posted here about it too... if you look back far enough you might find it.
